Watertown is a city in and the county seat of Codington County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 20,237 at the 2000 census. It is also the principal city of the Watertown Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Codington and Hamlin counties. Paul S. Fox is the current Mayor. Watertown has one public high school, Watertown High School, and one private boarding school, Great Plains Lutheran High School.
Valley City is a city in Barnes County, North Dakota in the United States. It is the county seat of Barnes County. The population was 6,826 at the 2000 census. Valley City was founded in 1874.The city is known for its many bridges over the Sheyenne River. These bridges have earned it the distinction of being called the “City of Bridges”.
Spearfish is a city in Lawrence County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 8,606 at the 2000 census. Spearfish holds the world record for the fastest temperature change. On January 22, 1943 at about 7:30 a.m. MST, the temperature in Spearfish was -4° degrees F (-20°C). The chinook wind picked up speed rapidly, and two minutes later (7:32 a.m.) the temperature was +45°F above zero (+7°C). The 49-degree rise (27°C) in two minutes set a world record that still holds.
Sioux Falls is the largest city in the U.S. state of South Dakota. Sioux Falls is the county seat of Minnehaha County, and also extends into Lincoln County to the south. The city is the primary city of the Sioux Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area, and as of the 2000 census, Sioux Falls had a population of 123,975 and a metropolitan area population of 187,093. However, a 2007 Census Bureau estimate shows Sioux Falls to have grown to a population of 151,505, with a metropolitan population of 227,171.
Rapid City is the second-largest city in the U.S. state of South Dakota, and the county seat of Pennington County. Named after the Rapid Creek on which the city is established, it is set against the eastern slope of the Black Hills mountain range. Rapid City had a population of 59,607 at the 2000 census. Rapid City is known as the “Gateway to the Black Hills” and the “Star of the West”.
The city of Pierre is the capital of the U.S. state of South Dakota and the county seat of Hughes County. The population was 13,876 at the 2000 census, making it the second least populous state capital after Montpelier, Vermont. Founded in 1880 on the Missouri River opposite Fort Pierre, Pierre has been South Dakota’s capital since it gained statehood on November 11, 1889, having been chosen for its location in the geographic center of the state. It is also a major statewide transportation hub and is famous for its memorial hall. The Capital Journal is the local newspaper.
Minot is a city located in north central North Dakota in the United States. With a population of 36,567 at the 2000 census, Minot is the fourth largest city in the state. The city is the county seat of Ward County and is a trading center for a large portion of northern North Dakota, southwestern Manitoba, and southeastern Saskatchewan. Founded in 1886 during the construction of the Great Northern Railroad, Minot is also known as the “Magic City”.
Jamestown is a city in Stutsman County, North Dakota in the United States. It is the county seat of Stutsman County. The population was 15,527 at the 2000 census, making it the seventh largest city in North Dakota. Jamestown was founded in 1872.

Grand Forks is the third-largest city in the U.S. state of North Dakota and the county seat of Grand Forks County. In July 2007, its population was estimated at 51,740, and it had an estimated metropolitan population of 97,691. Grand Forks, along with its twin city of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, forms the center of the Grand Forks, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is often called Greater Grand Forks or The Grand Cities.
Fargo is the largest city in the U.S. state of North Dakota and the county seat of Cass County. In 2008, its population was estimated at nearly 100,000 and it had an estimated metropolitan population of 192,417. Fargo, along with its twin city of Moorhead, Minnesota, as well as adjacent West Fargo, North Dakota and Dilworth, Minnesota, form the center of the Fargo-Moorhead, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Dickinson is a city in Stark County, North Dakota in the United States. It is the county seat of Stark County. The population was 16,010 at the 2000 census. Dickinson was founded in 1882.The local paper is the Dickinson Press. Theodore Roosevelt Regional Airport serves the city.
Brookings is a city in Brookings County, South Dakota, United States. Brookings is the fifth largest city in South Dakota, with a population of 18,504 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Brookings County, and home to South Dakota State University, the largest institution of higher education in the state. The mayor is Scott Munsterman.
Bismarck is the capital of the U.S. state of North Dakota, the county seat of Burleigh County, and the second most populous city in North Dakota after Fargo. Its population was 55,532 at the 2000 census. Its metropolitan population was 94,719 in 2000, but was estimated in 2007 to have grown to 107,719. Bismarck was founded in 1872. Bismarck has been North Dakota’s capital since it gained statehood in 1889.
Aberdeen is a city and the county seat of Brown County, South Dakota, USA, about 125 mi (200 km) N.E. of Pierre. Settled in 1880, it was incorporated in 1882. The city population was 24,658 at the 2000 census. The American News is the local newspaper.
Turtle Mountain, or the Turtle Mountains, is an area in the north-central portion of the U.S. state of North Dakota and southwestern portion of the Canadian province of Manitoba. It is a plateau 2,000 ft (600 m) above sea level, 300 ft to 400 ft (90 m to 120 m) above the surrounding countryside, extending 20 mi (32 km) from north to south and 40 mi (64 km) from east to west.
It has timber, numerous lakes, and small deposits of low-grade manganese. The Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation is in a valley on the southeastern edge of the plateau. The International Peace Garden is also located in the region.
One of the most popular and largest lakes in the Turtle Mountain is Lake Metigoshe. It straddles the Canada-U.S. border, with about one-eighth of the lake in Canada. The region is home to a provincial park, a state park, two historic sites, and various hunting and fishing opportunities.
In the late 1890s there was coal mining in the Turtle Mountain near Old Deloraine town site. However when better quality coal was found elsewhere and the Trans-Canada Railway was built, the mines closed and the town moved off the mountain. The old town site is now covered by a man made lake, made when the Turtle-Head Dam was built.
